On New Year’s Eve, you could head out to a local soiree or spend the evening binge watching shows on Netflix trying to stay awake until midnight.
Or, you could head to Prescott, Flagstaff or another chilly yet festive Arizona city to ring in 2020 in a distinctly different way.
From a big colorful cowboy boot inching its way down a flagpole in Prescott to a shiny metal pine cone festooned with lights taking the plunge in Flagstaff, there are lots of ways to say, “So long, partner” to 2019 and “Well, howdy!” to 2020.
Here are five places around Arizona to celebrate New Year's Eve.
Prescott: Whiskey Row Boot Drop
If you have ever wondered what a giant illuminated cowboy boot would look like slowly dropping down a 40-foot flagpole, by all means grab your winter duds and head to Prescott to find out.
Whiskey Row will transform into a family-friendly street party as thousands of people gather to ring in the New Year for the ninth annual boot drop.
A colorful 6-foot-tall cowboy boot will be lowered from The Palace Building’s flagpole two times. If you're with youngsters or are looking for an early night yourself, you can ring in the New Year at 10 p.m., which coincides with the New York City celebration. Party people can watch it all go down at midnight. Or, stay for both drops — it’s up to you.
Matt Brassard, co-owner of M&M Entertainment & Productions, said the boot is covered with about 5,000 LED lights. Each drop usually attracts 4,000 to 6,000 people, he said, adding that the boot was recently given a complete makeover including new paint and lights.
“We are taking the boot into the next decade,” he said.
Fireworks will light up the sky during both drops and, weather-permitting, there will be Ferris wheel rides and food and drink from local vendors. Prizes will be given out throughout the night, and the crowd can enjoy DJ music by Magic 99.1 FM and live music by the band 90 Proof, which Brassard said plays '90s music that is “really danceable stuff.”
The boot will also be on display at Enchanted Christmas inside Prescott Gateway Mall until Dec. 27.
Details: 10 p.m. and midnight Tuesday, Dec. 31. 201 S. Montezuma St., Prescott. Free. bootdrop.com.
Flagstaff: Great Pinecone Drop
Head to Flagstaff and join thousands of partiers to watch a 6-foot-tall metal pine cone illuminated with hundreds of LED lights get lowered from the roof of the Weatherford Hotel.
Like the cowboy boot in Prescott, the pinecone will make two drops: one at 10 p.m. and another at midnight.
Pamela S. (Sam) Green, who co-owns the Weatherford Hotel along with her husband Henry Taylor, said the couple started the Great Pine Cone Drop in 1999 to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the hotel, which opened on Jan. 1, 1900, and to celebrate the history of Flagstaff.
'We have a new and upgraded sign high above the crowds, and there will be fireworks shows at 10 pm and at midnight,” Green said, adding that the Great Pine Cone Drop has become a tradition in Flagstaff.
“This is the 21st anniversary for the Great Pine Cone Drop, and it will be the same great event, with the light show of the Great Pine Cone and with live music, DJ Mario Solis and 10,000 or more of your friends and family in the street,” Green said.
The Weatherford also has holiday attractions in its restaurants.
“We also have Big Chad performing in the Gopher Hole and Charly Spining playing the baby grand in Charly’s Pub for our dinner guests. We will have a specialty menu for the evening with a choice of prime rib, chicken, salmon or our vegetarian choice of Portobello Wellington.' Call the hotel for dinner reservations.
